Reflection:
After 12 weeks and 5 projects I am wrapping up my genious hour project. At some points during this project I had more fun than others. My least favorite project was the holiday sign because it was my first project and it was rushed so it did not turn out as well as I hoped it would. My favorite project is between the stool and the glowing clouds. These are my favorite because I had been wanting to make them since before I knew about this project and they turned out really well. Presentation: For my presentation I will be using a slide show that looks like a scrapbook. It will include pictures, videos, and reflections for each project. I might pick an easy painting craft to do so that I can include a video in the presentation.

Finding the Design: Last week I thought I picked out what I wanted to do for my final project, as I continued thinking about it I realized I wanted to do something different. This project is the last one! I am spending three weeks on this project instead of two because it will be more time consuming, this is due to the quantity I have to make. This project will require some of the new skills I have learned so far. The final project is..... glowing clouds! I am super excited and cannot wait to get working! Preparations: Lights (battery powered Christmas lights, any color), lanterns (white), stuffing, hot glue, hot glue gun, and fishing line. Steps: 1. open up lantern 2. glue stuffing on lantern by ripping it in pieces (remember clouds are not smooth) 3. cover the whole lantern except the bottom hole 4. place the Christmas lights inside the lantern by putting it through the bottom hole 5. cover the bottom hole with stuffing but leave an access to the lights 6. you can either keep the lights inside the cloud (so it glows) or let them hang out of the cloud (like it is raining) 7. to make bigger clouds glue two lanterns together 8. repeat these steps for as many clouds you would like to make Challenges I Might Face: On the website where I found this idea there was a warning to be careful because the clouds might catch on fire. That is my biggest concern. Another problem I might have is keeping the lights in the clouds, because they may weigh the lantern down which will make it difficult to hang them, hopefully this will not be an issue. The Final Product: The final product turned out great! Weight wasn't a problem, and I kept them on for over 24 hours and they did not catch on fire. At first I had trouble attaching the stuffing, but I later got the hang of it. I am super happy with all of my projects, but this is my favorite. weeks 9-11
Preparations: For this project I will need a drill, screws, a round piece of wood, four wood stool legs, fabric, metal top plate, staple gun, and foam Steps:
* If you would like to paint the legs of the stool, do that before step two.* Challenges I Might Face: For this project my mentor will be helping me more because I have never used a drill before. I think I will be fine dealing with the fabric, staple gun, and wood. Overall I am not concered and I believe it will turn out well. Final Product: The final product turned out very well. I ran into no problems and everything went smoothly. I had fun using the drill throughout this project, and i´m excited to get started in the final project. Week 7-8
Preparations: For this project I will need a book, orange spray paint, a stick, white paper, fall colored ribbon, hot glue, and hot glue gun. Steps: 1. Take off the cover of the book 2. Take the white paper and cut out the shape you want your pumpkin to be 3. Now take the cut out piece of white paper and wrap it around the book (you can trace around the paper or staple the paper to the book 4. Cut the book by following the outline of the paper (exacto knives work best, if you only have scissors do 8-10 pages at a time) 5. Then glue the front page and the back page together by lining the side, closer to the spine of the book, with hot glue 6. Spread out the pages and glue some together if there are any gaps (do not glue the tops of the pages, instead glue the side closer to the spine) 7. After the book looks how you would like it to, spray the book with orange spray paint and let it dry (do not spray too close and one coat of paint works best) 8. After the orange spay paint dries, glue on the stick at the top of the book and tie ribbon around it Challenges I Might Face: Last week when I had to spray paint the corks I sprayed the coats to heavy and I was standing to close. Hopefully I will improve my spray paint job, and it will turn out good. Another challenge I might face is cutting the book. Exacto knives work best for projects like this, but I do not have one so I will have to use scissors. Lastly I'm worried that I will not be able to spread out the pages and get them to stay how I would like them. Final Product: I am surprisingly happy with the results. I didn't have anything go wrong. The spray paint looks good, and I had no problem shaping the pages to get the book to look like a pumpkin. Also cutting the book with scissors wasn't as hard as I expected, it just took a little longer. I am very happy with my final product, and I'm glad to see my skills improving! week 5-6
![]() Preparations: To prepare for this project I will have to find the wood, cut it to the correct size and then sand down the edges. I will also gather my materials which are; paint (pink, white and black chalk paint), glitter (gold and silver), paint brushes, 7 corks, 7 hooks, clear coat spay paint, hot glue, and beads. Steps: 1. Find wood, cut it, then sand the edges 2. Paint and glitter corks 3. Spay paint corks with clear paint to keep glitter and paint on 4. Paint wood board with chalk paint 5. Screw hooks in corks 6. Glue beads on the cork tops 7. Glue corks on wood board 8. Line the top of the wood board with extra beads 9. Use chalk to write on board Challenges I Might Face: I might have trouble getting the corks to stay on the board and be strong enough to hold the hooks. I am also worried about the glitter coming off easily, hopefully the spray paint will help keep it on. The Final Project: I am very happy with the way the project turned out. I like the changes I made from the original design because it made it more unique. I had no problem getting the corks to stay on the wood, the hot glue worked fine. One thing I wish I would have done is measured the board to make sure my words were centered. ![]() Finding The Design: It was hard picking out my fist project because there were so many options. To get ideas for my project I looked on Pinterest. I am changing and adding to some of the design, but I hope to come up with my own designs later on in the project. I wanted to do something to get in the holiday sprit. After lots of research I have finally decided on a holiday sign. This sign has fall on one side and winter on the other. On the fall side it will say It's FALL Ya'll with other fall symbols such as leafs, acorns, burlap string and sunflowers. On the winter side it will say JOY with other winter symbols such as snowflakes, bows and snowmen. Preparations: The materials that I need are: paint, paint brushes, wood, string/rope/twine, glitter, fake leafs, To prepare for this project I will sketch a rough draft for both sides of the sign and gather the supplies. Steps: 1. Gather materials 2.Lay out drop cloth and get orange paint 3. Paint one side orange (I did 2 coats) 4. Before the paint dries sprinkle the glitter on 5. After that side is dry flip the piece of wood over and paint it white (this may take more coats) 6. Before paint dries sprinkle glitter on 7. After the white paint dries paint the word JOY on it 8. Now you can decorate however you would like 9. Flip the wood back over to the orange side and paint the word FALL on it 10. Now you can decorate however you would like Challenges I Might Face: One thing that is different from this projects then the others I have previously done is that it involves wood. As I was looking for ideas for my projects I realized all of them had wood in them. I have no previous experience with using wood, I can barley use a hammer. Realizing this helped me decide who my mentor is going to be. I am having a mentor to help guide and teach me through all of my projects. The Final Product: The final product isn't as good as I was hoping for. My letters were sloppy so to fix this problem I outlined each letter in glitter glue. After I did this I realized it was a mistake. The glitter glue made it look more like a child's craft. To fix the problem I rubbed the glitter glue over each of the letters. Then I used twine to outline the letters. The twine made a big difference and it matched the theme well. I think that the decorations I added to the sign helped the overall design. My favorite thing is the fall flower. To make this flower I took brown twine and made the center. Then I used green twine and made the petals. If I had to do this project again I would try to find stencils for the lettering and add more coats of the white paint. week 1-2 Welcome! I started this blog for a project, called genius hour. Genius hour is came from 20% time, something that the company Apple came up with. 20% time is where the employees of Apple got one day out of the week to brainstorm new ideas and innovations that would help the company. My genius hour (20% time) we do something similar. one day out of the week we get an hour to work on a skill we would like to improve.
For my genius hour I will be working to improve my crafting skills such as, painting, creating, wood work, and out of the box thinking. throughout this project I will be posting step by step instructions and pictures for each of my projects. |
